Still Here, Still Nebraska: Welcome Back to Nebraska Outback
It’s been a while. Years, actually. If you’ve found your way back to Nebraska Outback, thank you for sticking around. If you’re new here, welcome.
For anyone who missed the first chapter, this blog started as a love letter to Nebraska. There were Scenic Sundays down Sandhills roads, Windmill Wednesdays, and tours of small towns that deserve a lot more visitors than they get. In the spring of 2020 at the height of the pandemic, there was a long run of Cheap Nebraska Homes, because I believed, and still believe, that rural Nebraska has room and a warm welcome for anyone looking for a slower, friendlier place to land.
Then life got busy and the posts stopped. But I never let go of this blog. I’ve kept the domain all these years so that none of the work would be lost, and it’s all still here.
So what’s changing? I’ve been writing a lot lately, mostly essays on social media about where our country is and where it’s headed. A scrolling feed is a poor home for words that took real time to write. Nebraska Outback is going to be a little bigger, and these essays will live here.
You’ll still find the Nebraska I love: the places, the people, and the everyday things that make small towns worth fighting for. And you’ll find a lot more political writing. I’m working, alongside many of you, to rebuild America and put us back on the path we were once headed down. I don’t think that work starts in Washington. It starts in places like this, where neighbors know each other’s names and a good idea can still get a hearing at the kitchen table.
So whether it's fighting to save the hometown grocery store or fighting to keep a data center from destroying our way of life, you'll find it here. You'll also find plenty of examples of what makes rural Nebraska great, despite the tough times we are all facing.
Pull up a chair. The coffee's on, and there’s plenty to talk about.
